Ayodhya sees higher searches than Goa, Nainital; room rates cross ₹70,000: Is ‘spiritual tourism’ the next big trend?
Ayodhya is poised to become one of the top tourist destinations in India after the inauguration of the Ram Temple, with a significant increase in app users and bookings.
With the inauguration of the Ram Temple, Ayodhya is emerging as a prominent destination in the flourishing trend of spiritual tourism in India. OYO's Ritesh Aggarwal highlights the increasing popularity of Ayodhya, noting a substantial 70% surge in OYO app users compared to other well-known destinations such as Goa (50%) and Nainital (60%). This growth signifies the rising allure of Ayodhya among travelers, positioning it as one of the most sought-after tourist spots in the country.
Occupancy rates rose to 100%, some hotels charging ₹7,000
According to Rajesh Magow, the co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip, there has been a fivefold increase in year-on-year searches, and the bookings for Ayodhya are four times more compared to the previous year.
Magow mentioned, as reported by Moneycontrol, "At the moment, room night bookings in Ayodhya are almost 10 percent of the top pilgrimage sites in the country, so the potential for growth is significant."
Citing trends, EaseMyTrip stated that the consecration ceremony in Ayodhya anticipates an initial attendance of nearly 7,000 guests, with a projected daily footfall of three to five lakh visitors post-inauguration, offering substantial economic opportunities.
Leading up to the inauguration, hotels in Ayodhya are reportedly fully booked, allowing them to capitalize on increased pricing. Occupancy rates have surged from 80% to 100%, resulting in significant price hikes, reaching up to ₹70,000 per night in select hotels.
Ayodhya is undergoing significant infrastructural growth
The data indicates a promising growth trajectory for the tourism sector in Ayodhya, with the region currently experiencing significant infrastructural expansion. Plans are underway for the development of 73 new properties, including 40 that are currently in the construction phase.
OYO's ambitious plans involve the incorporation of 50 hotels and homes, adding 1,000 rooms before the grand opening of the Ram Mandir, ultimately reaching a total of 10,000 rooms. This diverse accommodation setup comprises 150 economy hotels, 30 dharmshalas, and 20 luxury hotels.
An OYO spokesperson informed Mint, "These new properties will be strategically located near Ayodhya's prominent landmarks, ensuring convenient access for visitors exploring the city's iconic attractions."
In catering to tourists in the mid to luxury category, the Radisson Hotel Group has introduced its property, Park Inn by Radisson Ayodhya. KB Kachru from Radisson Hotel Group mentioned, "The property can be easily accessed by car or taxi from Maharishi Valmiki International Airport and Ayodhya Cantt Railway Station. It also has ample parking space for those traveling by car. The hotel offers proximity to notable landmarks such as the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, The Hanuman Garhi Temple, and Sita ki Rasoi, among others."
Is spiritual tourism the next big trend?
Various travel companies have observed a rising interest in 'spiritual tourism' across diverse demographic segments, including families, couples, millennials, and seniors.
Daniel D’Souza, President & Country Head - Holidays at SOTC Travel, highlighted that "Young India is exploring 'spiritual plus' tourism, combining pilgrimage/spiritual experiences with local food and cultural trails, as well as adventure experiences at the destination."
OYO's year-end booking data revealed that Puri claimed the top spot as the most booked spiritual destination, followed by Amritsar, Varanasi, and Haridwar.
Anticipating significant growth in this segment, an OYO spokesperson stated to Mint, "We believe the tourism industry could see a tenfold increase in tourism by 2024, making Ayodhya a global spiritual center akin to Vatican City and Mecca." This underscores the potential for Ayodhya to become a prominent global destination for spiritual tourism.
