Ayodhya, renowned as the birthplace of Lord Ram, stands as a sacred city that beckons tourists and devotees from across the globe. Steeped in spirituality, Ayodhya boasts numerous temples and ghats, drawing spiritual seekers who yearn for a profound experience within the city's hallowed precincts. The focal point of religious fervor, Ram Janmabhoomi, the disputed land marking the exact spot of Lord Ram's birth, witnessed religious discord culminating in the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. Erected by Mughal Emperor Babur, the mosque was believed to replace a pre-existing Hindu temple. Architect Chandrakant Sompura embarked on designing the Ram Mandir around 1988-90, setting the stage for a protracted legal and religious battle. The contentious issue of the proposed Ram Mandir was recently resolved with the Supreme Court's 2019 verdict, transferring control to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. This paved the way for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, with the groundbreaking ceremony held on August 5, 2020, under the auspices of the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The ceremony incorporated water and soil from various revered sites across India. Unveiling the comprehensive scale model during the ceremony, the construction officially commenced at the site of the Bhumi Pujan, which will form the inner sanctum of the temple. The ambitious project is anticipated to conclude in approximately three and a half years. Over the decades, the Ram Mandir design underwent modifications from its original 1980s blueprint. Initially conceived as a two-story structure with a height of 141 feet and 212 pillars, the plan evolved during the three-decade delay in commencing construction. The revised layout of the new Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is presented below, reflecting the changes and enhancements made to the temple's design.

Design Specifications of Ram Temple in Ayodhya:

  • The envisioned temple is set to be a three-story octagonal marvel, crafted in the Nagarstyle architectural tradition, perched on an elevated platform. Embracing the main structure will be four smaller temples, forming a harmonious ensemble.

  • The comprehensive design includes 16-foot side stairs, five mandaps (pavilions), and a sacred inner sanctum housing the revered 'Ram Lalla'—the infant Lord Ram. Over the mandaps, five domes will grace the structure, culminating in a singular temple peak/spire above the inner sanctum.

  • Supporting this grand spectacle will be a network of 318 pillars, strategically distributed across the three floors, with 106 pillars on each level. The temple's imposing dimensions are slated to reach 161 feet in height and 140 feet in width, sprawling over a vast expanse of 100 to 120 acres. Its capacity to host 50,000 devotees concurrently adds to its magnificence.

  • The construction materials, sourced meticulously, include stones from the Bharatpur, Jodhpur, and Banshi mountains in Rajasthan, complemented by white marble from Makrana. A staggering 1.75 lakh cubic feet of stone will be requisitioned for this architectural feat.

  • Notably, the pillars and stones initially earmarked for the Ram Temple's original design specifications in Ayodhya will find a purposeful reincarnation in the new Ram Mandir Design, sufficient for the construction of one floor.

  • The temple's foundation will be solidified by 2 lakh bricks, each inscribed with the name of Shri Ram, ensuring a robust structure capable of withstanding an earthquake of a magnitude up to 10 on the Richter scale.

The envisioned new Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, coupled with the ambitious initiative by the Uttar Pradesh Government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to transform Ayodhya into a 'smart city,' signals a significant shift toward Ayodhya becoming a global tourism hub. This transformation is poised to attract not only Indian tourists but also visitors from around the world. The symbolic nature of this metamorphosis is exemplified by the groundbreaking ceremony of the temple, which was showcased in a captivating 3D display on Times Square in New York. This international exposure has captured the attention of the global audience, pointing towards a promising future for a revitalized and culturally rich Ayodhya that holds immense appeal on the world stage.
